Indoor Gardening:
Good for body, mind and soul!
March 23, 2023
Gardening has become a big deal the last few years: more and more people are getting their hands dirty, finding joy in growing their own food or flowers, and making their yards more enjoyable. Riding this wave, 2022 was officially designated as the Year of the Garden in Canada! But what about winter, or those who live in apartments or condos without a yard or even a balcony? You can garden too: with houseplants!
The tropical houseplant craze has captivated everyone from 9 to 90. Nurturing plants has been scientifically proven to improve our well-being by boosting our serotonin levels and many plants have strong air-purifying qualities, removing pollutants from inside your home. Sometimes, it causes us to assess our indoor environment, adjusting temperature or humidity to suit our plants which is often better for us too. And there’s the pure joy when a favourite plant sends out a new, beautiful leaf or starts to form flower buds – it’s a feeling that can’t be beat!
The variety of plants ranges from tiny succulents to tall palms or huge monsteras, and from easy-going snake plants to gorgeous, attention-hogging divas like calatheas. There are pet-friendly plants, air-purifying plants, low-light-tolerant plants, flowering plants, plants with every shape of leaf, and so many more. There is literally something for everyone, as long as you have windows or a grow light, you can grow something!
Some people think they have no green thumb, that they kill houseplants – but this happens to even the most experienced indoor gardener! Gardening is a journey and we can all learn from our mistakes to get the right plant for us and give it the right care. There are many resources out there - books, websites, blogs, etc. We recommend you come in and talk to one of our staff to get suggestions for a plant that will suit your space and other needs.
You can start your indoor garden small with a single plant. Or you can go all in and create a whole indoor garden full of tropical beauties. Either way you will reap the benefits of wellness, joy and a deep sense of accomplishment when you add a little garden to your life. And we will be here to help you with whichever way you choose to do it.
